Day 2: Full day sightseeing Kathmandu Durbar Square
Our day begins with a visit to Durbar Square, one of Kathmandu's most famous attractions. Durbar Square is not far from the hotel where you'll be staying overnight, it takes about 30 to 40 minutes to get there. We recommend walking, though it's optional. Walking gives you the chance to experience the real daily life of Kathmandu's local communities, especially the Newar people, one of Nepal’s indigenous groups. We'll guide you along the way and point out interesting sights that most tourists don’t usually get to see. This royal square, also known as Basantapur Square, is one of the three UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley. Although many temples were damaged in the earthquake, they have been rebuilt, and the square still retains its charm and beauty.
We’ll visit the Kumari Palace, where a living goddess, the Kumari, resides. If we’re lucky, she may appear at the window, though photography is strictly prohibited. The square also features the impressive Taleju Temple, dedicated to the goddess Taleju, a form of Durga, who was worshipped with blood sacrifices during the Malla dynasty. As we walk through the area, we’ll pass by smaller temples and pagodas, eventually reaching Basantapur Square, where our private vehicle will take us to the next stop.
Next, we’ll drive to Swayambunath, also known as the Monkey Temple. This ancient site, standing high above the city, offers a breathtaking view of Kathmandu’s skyline. Parts of the temple, which is sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus, are over 2,000 years old. If you like, we can walk up the 365 steps to reach the stupa. On the way, we’ll often see monkeys around. But the walking steps are optional — we can also drive to the top if you prefer, both ways offer great views. After the visit, our vehicle will be waiting to take us to Boudhanath.
Boudanath, with its famous stupa, is not only a major tourist spot but also one of the largest and most significant Buddhist shrines outside Tibet. This area is a religious hub for Tibetans living in Nepal. We’ll walk clockwise around the stupa, observing monks and devotees turning prayer wheels and chanting mantras. We’ll also visit one of the renowned monasteries, where we might be lucky enough to see monks performing their puja (prayers). Nearby, several small restaurants with rooftop terraces offer a chance to relax and watch the lively atmosphere. we will have a break for lunch there before moving on.
Our sightseeing continues to the Pashupatinath temple complex, located on the Bagmati River. The Bagmati River is one of the most sacred rivers in Nepal. It flows through the Kathmandu Valley and passes by the famous Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most important Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The river is used for religious rituals, including cremation ceremonies, and is deeply respected by both locals and pilgrims. After flowing through Kathmandu, the Bagmati river continues to flow towards the Ganges River in India which is also holy river for Hindus. In both Nepal and India, the Bagmati is seen as a spiritual river, playing an important role in the lives of many people. We’ll also visit the cremation sites, where Hindus honor their dead. Watching a cremation ceremony here is a rare and respectful experience, offering insight into local customs and beliefs.
