The Upper Mustang Trek is a captivating journey into Nepal’s hidden kingdom of Lo, a remote and culturally rich region tucked away in the rain-shadow of the Himalayas. Known for its striking desert-like landscapes of red cliffs, deep canyons, and wide-open valleys, Upper Mustang offers trekkers a rare glimpse into ancient Tibetan culture preserved for centuries. The trek begins with a spectacular flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, flying between the towering peaks of Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri, setting the tone for an unforgettable adventure. From the traditional village of Kagbeni, the trail leads to the medieval walled city of Lo-Manthang, home to royal palaces, ancient monasteries, and vibrant festivals. Along the way, we visit sacred sites such as Luri Gumba monastery and the mysterious Chong Cape caves carved into cliffs. While much of the route follows roads, skilled guides find natural trails to maintain the trek’s authentic and peaceful feel. Rich in spiritual atmosphere, with prayer flags, mani walls, and chortens lining the paths, the Upper Mustang Trek offers a unique blend of stunning scenery, deep cultural heritage, and timeless tradition.

Itinerary

01

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m)

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, one of our friendly management team members will be there to receive you with a warm welcome. If you are arriving Nepal for the first time, Kathmandu can feel overwhelming at first, the crowds, traffic, and fast-paced hustle might surprise you. But as you begin to explore, you’ll soon discover that beneath the surface lies a city full of rich culture, history, and hidden gems waiting to be appreciated. The blend of ancient temples, colorful markets, and spiritual ambiance makes Kathmandu a unique and unforgettable place. From the airport, we’ll drive you comfortably to the hotel. Depending on your arrival time, we will arrange a short briefing to prepare you for your trek. If you arrive in the morning or early afternoon, we’ll organize an orientation meeting in the evening. During this session, our company representative and your guide will give you a final briefing about the trek, answer any questions, and make sure you’re ready for the journey ahead. If your flight arrives later in the day, we’ll hold the briefing the next morning after breakfast or at evening after full-day sightseeing in Kathmandu valley.

Day 2: Full-day Sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley (1,350m) / Duration: 8-9 hrs

After breakfast, we begin our full-day cultural exploration of Kathmandu. We start with a pleasant 20-minute walk to Basantapur Durbar Square. Although driving is an option, we recommend walking so you can experience the vibrant street life and witness the daily activities of the Newar community—one of the Indigenous groups of the Kathmandu Valley, known for their rich culture, art, and architecture. At Basantapur Durbar Square, we explore the entire palace complex, which is filled with centuries-old temples, courtyards, and historical monuments. One of the highlights here is a visit to the Kumari palace, living goddess worshipped by both Hindus and Buddhists. Next, we take a short drive through our private vehicle to Swayambhunath Stupa also known as the Monkey Temple. Situated at top of the hill, this ancient stupa offers a panoramic view of the entire Kathmandu Valley. On clear days, you can even see the distant snowcapped Himalayan peaks. We then head to Boudhanath Stupa, about a 30-minute drive depending on traffic. Boudhanath is one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its peaceful atmosphere and vibrant Tibetan Buddhist culture. We enjoy lunch at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the stupa, soaking in the serene energy of the area. Our final stop is Pashupatinath Temple Complex, the most sacred Hindu temple in Nepal dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located on the banks of the Bagmati River, this temple complex is not only a place of worship but also a center for Hindu cremation rituals and spiritual gatherings. After a fulfilling day of sightseeing, we drive back to the hotel to rest and prepare for the journey ahead.

Day 3: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara by Tourist Bus (822m) / Duration: 6-7 hrs

After an early breakfast, we start our journey to Pokhara by sofa seater tourist bus. The drive takes about 6–7 hours depending upon traffic, and the road follows rivers, small villages, and green hills. We will enjoy beautiful views of the countryside, terraced fields, and traditional homes along the way. We pass by local towns and may stop for tea or lunch breaks. It’s a great way to see how people live outside the big city. Pokhara is a true holiday destination, loved not only by international travelers but also by local people. After checking in, we can rest or take a short walk around the lake. The calm water reflects the mountains on a clear day, and we might see boats floating gently. In the evening, we can explore Lakeside Pokhara, which is full of restaurants, music, and shops. It’s a relaxing and friendly place. We can enjoy dinner with a view of the lake or the distant mountains. Tomorrow, we begin our exciting journey into the Mustang region, so this is a perfect day to rest and enjoy the quiet beauty of Pokhara.

Day 4: Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom and Trek to Kagbeni (2,810m) / Duration: 4-5 hrs

Today begins early. After breakfast, we head to Pokhara airport for a scenic mountain flight to Jomsom. The flight takes about 20–25 minutes and offers stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Jomsom is the headquarters of the Mustang district and is located in the Kali Gandaki valley. The air is crisp, and the landscape already starts to feel different—drier and more rugged. Once we land, we begin our trek towards Kagbeni, a beautiful village that lies at the entrance to Upper Mustang. The walk takes about 3–4 hours along a windy trail beside the Kali Gandaki River. The trail is wide and easy to follow, with amazing views of barren cliffs and snow-capped peaks. In the evening, we visit the Kagbeni Monastery, where monks perform daily puja (prayer rituals). There is also a Buddhist school where young children from Upper Dolpa and remote villages come to learn and train as monks. The atmosphere is peaceful and spiritual. Kagbeni itself is an ancient village with stone houses and narrow alleyways. This evening, you’ll feel the deep culture of the Himalayas and get your first taste of the unique world of Mustang.

Day 5: Trek to Chaile (3,150m) / Duration:7-8 hrs

After breakfast, we leave Kagbeni and officially enter Upper Mustang. At this point, we need a special trekking permit because Upper Mustang is a restricted area with its own unique culture and landscape. The trail today takes us through the gateway of Upper Mustang, and the change in scenery is quite noticeable. The dry and desert-like terrain is full of colors—brown, grey, and red cliffs that seem carved by wind and time. The trail follows the Kali Gandaki River and passes by small settlements and Tibetan-style houses. We walk along a less-traveled path, avoiding the main dusty road used by jeeps. Our guides take you on a more peaceful, alternative route that lets you enjoy the nature and traditional paths. As we reach the village of Chaile, we see whitewashed houses and a small monastery. Chaile is a quiet place surrounded by steep ridges. From here, we’ll start feeling the real atmosphere of Mustang, where life moves slowly and traditions are well-preserved. Today’s walk takes about 7-8 hours and includes some uphill sections. In the evening, enjoy warm tea and dinner while your guide shares stories about the region. Rest well for another beautiful trekking day tomorrow.

Day 6: Trek to Syangboche (3,800m) via Milarepa Cave / Duration: 7-8 hrs

After breakfast in Chaile, we begin a beautiful day of trekking. Today’s trail leads us through high cliffs, narrow canyons, and small villages. Our route includes a visit to the Milarepa Cave, a sacred site where the famous Tibetan saint Milarepa meditated. This cave holds deep spiritual meaning for many Buddhists, and the peaceful energy here is strong. Our trail is special—an alternative path that avoids dusty roads and follows local, natural trails. These trails are quieter and offer more authentic experiences. We climb and descend several small passes, walk through dry fields, and enjoy panoramic views of Mustang’s colorful cliffs and hills. The landscape changes often, with views of golden hills, deep gorges, and snow-covered peaks far in the distance. We reach the quiet village of Syangboche in the afternoon after about 7-8 hours of walking. It’s a remote but beautiful place, perfect for resting and enjoying the silence of the mountains. You’ll feel how far we’ve come from busy cities as we sleep under Mustang’s starry skies.

Day 7: Trek to Dhakmar (3,820m) / Distance: 6-7 hrs

Today we continue our journey deeper into the magical landscapes of Upper Mustang. After breakfast, we leave Syangboche and walk through dry hills, narrow trails, and quiet valleys. This part of the trek shows the unique beauty of Mustang—layers of colors in the mountains like gold, white, brown, and black. These natural colors make the landscape look like a painting. We pass through small villages, where we’ll see local people working in the fields or caring for animals. We’ll notice how different life is here—simple, peaceful, and connected to the land. The trail is a mix of ups and downs, and the cool breeze from the highlands makes the walk refreshing. After around 6-7 hours of walking, we reach Dhakmar, a village famous for its red cliffs and small green fields. The red cliffs are especially stunning in the evening light. This village has a small monastery and some guesthouses where we will rest for the night. We can walk around the village, meet local people, or just relax and enjoy the silence.

Day 8: Trek to Lo Manthang via Ghar Gumba (3,810m) / Duration: 8-9 hrs

Today is one of the most exciting days of the trek, as we head to Lo Manthang, the walled capital of Upper Mustang. Instead of taking the shorter route through Charang, we choose the natural trail via Ghar Gumba. Ghar Gumba is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in the region and is deeply spiritual. The trail is longer, but it’s peaceful and filled with beauty, culture, and history—a path that’s truly worth it. As we walk, we pass dry riverbeds, ancient stone walls, and mountain ridges. The monastery at Ghar Gumba sits in a quiet, peaceful spot, surrounded by hills. It’s a special place, and many people stop here to pray or simply enjoy the silence. After visiting the monastery, we continue walking toward Lo Manthang. The views of the valley and distant mountains are incredible. After about 8-9 hours of walk, we arrive at Lo Manthang, an ancient kingdom hidden in the high desert of Mustang. We will see its tall walls and whitewashed houses—this is a place full of tradition and history. If you prefer the lower trail via Charang, we can adjust the route, but the Ghar Gumba way is highly recommended for a rich experience.

09

Day 9: Day Hike to Chungsi (Chhoser) Cave (3,700m) / Duration: 6-7 hrs

Today is a special day for exploring. After breakfast, we take a day hike to Chungsi Cave, also known as Chhoser Cave or Chong Cave. This ancient cave is hidden in the cliffs north of Lo Manthang and holds a deep spiritual story. It is believed that Guru Ringboche, a powerful Buddhist saint, meditated here in the 8th century. We walk through wide valleys, cross small streams, and pass by traditional villages along the way. The views are wide and open, with sandy cliffs and small chortens (Buddhist shrines) decorating the trail. When we reach the cave, we can explore its different rooms—some are carved deep into the cliffs and were once used as homes and meditation spaces. The area around the cave is peaceful and full of spiritual energy. Our guide will share stories and the authentic history behind this sacred site. We return to Lo Manthang in the afternoon, with plenty of time to relax and enjoy the evening. This hike is not too difficult and takes about 6-7 hours round trip. It’s a beautiful way to learn more about Mustang’s religious history and connect with its deep spiritual roots.

Day 10: Explore Lo Manthang (3,810m)

Today is a rest and exploration day in Lo Manthang, the ancient walled city of Upper Mustang. After many days of trekking, this is the perfect moment to slow down and enjoy the culture, history, and peaceful rhythm of this beautiful town. Lo Manthang was once the capital of the Kingdom of Mustang. It is surrounded by tall walls and filled with whitewashed houses, narrow alleys, and colorful prayer flags. In the morning, we explore monasteries, including Jampa Lhakhang, Thubchen Gompa, and Chhoede Monastery—each full of ancient paintings, statues, and quiet meditation halls. We can also walk to the royal palace, which is a symbol of Mustang’s long history. Some parts are closed, but we can still see its beautiful architecture and hear stories about the Mustang kings who once lived there. In the afternoon, enjoy free time to walk around the town, meet local people, or shop for handmade items like jewelry, wool scarves, or Buddhist artifacts. Lo Manthang feels like a place from another time, full of peace and tradition. After sunset, the town becomes quiet and magical. Enjoy a warm dinner and prepare for the next part of your journey deeper into Mustang.

011

Day 11: Trek to Yara (3,650m) / Duration: 7-8 hrs

Today we say goodbye to Lo Manthang and head towards Yara, a beautiful and less-visited village in the eastern part of Upper Mustang. The trail is peaceful and takes us through high desert landscapes with strange rock formations, cliffs, and wide open views. There are fewer people on this route, making it feel very remote and special. We descend gradually through a dry river valley, pass by small chortens and maniwalls (stone walls carved with prayers), and enjoy amazing views of eroded canyons that look like sandcastles formed by nature. We might see wild animals like blue sheep or vultures flying above the cliffs. After walking for about 7-8 hours, we arrive at Yara, a small, quiet village made of mud-brick houses. It feels peaceful and untouched by modern life. Local people still follow traditional ways of living, farming, and herding. This village is close to ancient cave systems and Buddhist sites that we’ll explore tomorrow. In the evening, we can relax, talk with locals, or simply enjoy the silence of the highlands. The sky here is clear and full of stars—a perfect place to unwind.

    Overnight at Guesthouse (Including Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
012

Day 12: Day hike to Luri Gumba (4,000m) / Distance:4-5 hrs

After breakfast, we go on a day hike to Luri Gumba, one of the most unique and sacred places in Mustang. This ancient cave monastery is hidden in a hillside and believed to be over 700 years old. It is a powerful spiritual place and a true highlight of the trek. The hike takes around 4–5 hours round trip. The trail is not too difficult but includes some short climbs. We walk through quiet paths, cross dry riverbeds, and pass small fields before reaching the cave. Luri Gumba is very special because the inside is painted with beautiful murals of Buddhist deities and symbols. It feels magical—like walking into a hidden temple. There are several chambers inside, and we’ll feel a deep sense of peace and history. Not many trekkers come this way, so the experience is quiet and personal. After exploring the monastery and taking in the spiritual energy, we return to Yara by the same trail. In the evening, we rest and enjoy a local dinner. This day is all about spiritual discovery and the hidden beauty of Mustang.

    Overnight at Guesthouse (Including Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
013

Day 13: Trek to Tangye (3,240m) / Duration: 7-8 hrs

Today we head to one of the most beautiful and remote villages in Mustang—Tangye. The walk is long and challenging but incredibly rewarding. We leave Yara early and cross the Dhi Khola (river), then climb up dry hills and walk through wide-open landscapes where few people travel. The trail takes us up and down over small passes, with incredible views of barren cliffs, river gorges, and faraway snow-capped mountains. We’ll see traditional Tibetan-style chortens and mani walls along the way, adding to the spiritual feeling of the land. After 7–8 hours of walking, we finally reach Tangye, a peaceful village surrounded by fields and massive cliffs. The village is known for its row of tall chortens, some of the largest in Mustang, and for its quiet, simple way of life. We can rest our feet, enjoy tea with locals, and reflect on how far we’ve come. Tonight, we will sleep in one of the most scenic and untouched places in all of Upper Mustang. Tangye is a true Himalayan gem.

    Overnight at Guesthouse (Including Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
014

Day 14: Trek to Tetang or Chusang (2,980m) / Duration: 9-10 hrs

Today is another long but beautiful day of trekking. We leave the quiet village of Tangye and head toward Tetang or Chusang depending on our preference and pace. The trail is remote and peaceful, with no villages in between for most of the way. It’s a long walk, so we start early in the morning. We cross a high pass with amazing views of the Mustang valley, and from the top, we can see the trail winding through dry hills and wild landscapes. The silence of the highlands is unforgettable. We may see eagles or blue sheep along the rocky cliffs. After about 9-10 hours of trekking, we reach Tetang, a small village with apple orchards and views of the Kali Gandaki river. If we continue a bit further, we reach Chusang. Both places are peaceful and perfect for rest after a full day of walking. We stay overnight in a local guesthouse, enjoy a warm meal, and relax. Tomorrow, we’ll reach Muktinath, a special pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists.

    Overnight at Guesthouse (Including Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
015

Day 15: Trek to Muktinath (3,800m) / Duration:6-7 hrs

Today we make our way to the sacred temple of Muktinath, a very important place for both Hindus and Buddhists. The trail from Tetang or Chusang climbs slowly but steadily, and along the way, we enjoy wide mountain views and peaceful valleys. This part of the trail connects us back to the popular trekking destination Annapurna circuit. After about 6–7 hours of walking, we reach Muktinath, which means “Place of Liberation.” Many pilgrims come here every year to pray and take a holy bath in the 108 water spouts. The temple is located at the base of Thorong La pass and has a mix of Hindu and Buddhist shrines. We can walk around the temple complex, spin prayer wheels, and see flames that burn naturally from underground gas—a sacred sign for devotees. The area feels spiritual and powerful. After our visit, we rest in the nearby village, enjoying views of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri peaks. Tonight, we sleep in Muktinath, surrounded by sacred energy and snow-capped mountains.

    Overnight at Guesthouse (Including Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
016

Day 16: Trek to Jomsom via Lupra Village (2,720m) / Duration: 5-6 hrs

Today we take a beautiful and quiet trail back to Jomsom, but instead of the busy road, we go through Lupra village. This village is one of the few remaining places that practice the Bon religion, an ancient spiritual tradition even older than Buddhism. It’s a great chance to see another side of Mustang’s culture. We start with a gentle climb, then walk down through canyons and dry riverbeds. The landscape is dramatic—tall cliffs, open skies, and deep gorges. Lupra is a small, hidden village, and we stop here to explore the Bon monastery and learn about its traditions. After our visit, we continue on to Jomsom, where the trail becomes wider and the wind picks up in the afternoon. We walk for around 5–6 hours today. Jomsom feels like a return to modern life after many days in the remote mountains. Tomorrow, we’ll fly back to Pokhara.

Day 17: Fly or Drive from Jomsom to Pokhara – Free Day (822m) / Duration: 20-25 min in Flight, 7-8 hrs Drive

This morning, we plan to take a short flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, which usually takes about 20-25 minutes and offers one last beautiful view of the Himalayan peaks. However, flights from Jomsom depend on weather conditions, and sometimes delays or cancellations happen. If the flight is not possible due to bad weather, we will drive back to Pokhara. The drive takes about 7–8 hours, following the scenic Kali Gandaki valley through mountain villages and river gorges. Because of this uncertainty, we keep this day free with no planned activities in Pokhara. After arrival—by flight or road—we transfer to the hotel near Fewa Lake, where we can rest and relax after many days of trekking. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Pokhara at your own pace. Tomorrow, we will explore the city with a gentle sightseeing tour.

It’s a fascinating stop for those interested in the mountain world. Finally, we drive back to Pokhara lake side and enjoy 1 hour boating in Phewa lake.
